A couple of days ago I introduced you to the Law of Process coined by John Maxwell in his book:  21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership (Amazon affiliate link).

The Law of Process is about becoming effective as a leader and the 4 phases you go through in becoming an effective leader.  One way I like to think about those phases is time laid out on a football field.

Here are the phases of the Law of Process:
1.)  I don’t know what I don’t know
2 )  I know what I don’t know
3.)  I grow and it starts to show
4.)  I go because I  know

As you can see in the picture above it looks normal until you get to the 50 year line ( I said year line on purpose).  I did that for a reason.  I like to think of the 4 phases John explains in his book against years in my life.

WARNING! Proceed with caution!

One concern you have to be aware of is that becoming an effective leader is not a race and does not happen over night.  Also, you don’t want to spend 45 years on a phase either!  My point is you need to have a plan in your life consistently  build and work on your leadership skills to become a effective leader.

Plan to be an effective leader

One way to become an effective leader is to read blogs.  I find it easier to get blogs emailed to me on a email account I check often.

“ It is easy to sign up for email feeds.
It takes discipline to read them. “

Becoming more effective is not easy.  If it was easy to be a great leader, everyone would be a CEO.

Here are some good leadership blogs & newsletters to follow:

1.)  Giant Impact
2.)  Tom Peters Blog
3.)  Top 100 Leadership Blogs

Sometimes listening is easier than reading

Pod casts are easy to download and put on your iPod or mp3 device.
Sometimes I enjoy listening while I am working and driving.   For me it makes it an easy way to learn and keep working.

Here are some Pod casts you can learn from:

1.)  Harvard Business Review
2.)  Andy Stanley’s Leadership
3.)  Catalyst
4.) The Welch Way

Those are just a few of hundreds of pod cast and blogs you can learn from.  If you have some you like to listen to please post them below in the comments I will add them to this post.

Keep learning and practicing what you learn and you will be on your way to becoming an effective leader.
